This is a pattern I experimented with in a few different ways but I finished up with what I feel is a very realistic interpretation of a daffodil. I made a few into brooches this year, donating some of the sales to the Marie Curie charity. They don't use up a lot of yarn so great for stash-busting. I also finished my brooches off by adding 12 beads around the edge of the trumpet. I hope you enjoy making them - they certainly brighten up my day!

Skill level - advanced beginner, intermediate

Equipment needed

  • Cotton DK, 1 or 2 colours (I use Paintbox cotton DK but you could also use acrylic DK but they won't be as defined)
  • Hook 3.5mm

Abbreviations - UK terms

MR magic ring
ST stitch
SP space
HTR half treble
DC double crochet
TR treble
SLST slip stitch
CH chain
DTR double treble (yarn over twice)
DDTR double double treble (yarn over 3 times)
STDC standing double treble

FO fasten off

Instructions

  1. MR
  2. CH1 (not incl as a st), 6HTR into MR making sure to crochet over your tail end. Pull tail end to close the MR, SLST into 1stHTR (6sts)
  3. CH1, 2DC into same st, 2DC in each remaining ST, SLST into 1st DC (12sts)
  4. *CH3, SK next DC, SLST into next DC*, repeat between ** another 5 times. (6 CH3)
  5. SLST into 1st CH3 SP, *CH3, 2TRs, 1DTR, 1DDTR, 1DTR, 3TRs, SLST into next CH3 SP* (1st petal made), repeat between ** another 5 times. (6 petals made) FO and sew in ends.
You can change to a different colour as this point. As you can see from the picture below I have used a peachy colour for the trumpet but you can keep going with the same yellow colour if you want the daffodil all the same colour as the picture above.

   6. Join with  new colour or the same colour with a STDC in the skipped DC from round 3, DC in same ST, 2DC in each skipped DC of round 3. SLST into 1st DC (12sts)
   7. *CH1, 1DC into same ST, 1DC into each ST, SLST into 1st DC* (12sts), repeat between ** again (you will have completed 3 rows of 12DCs)
  8. CH1, 2DC into same ST, 2DC in each ST, SLST into 1st DC (24sts)
  9. *CH1, SLST into same ST, SK next ST*, repeat between ** another 11 times. This gives the trumpet a slightly frilled edge. FO, sew in ends

Sunflower Pattern

This effective sunflower pattern is perfect for any embellishment project. Could be also be used as an applique for a hat or any accessory that requires a large flower. It’s finished size is approximately 11cm using the above suggested yarn and hook size so it will differ according to your choice of yarn and hook.  I like to make flowers in 100% cotton because it gives a ‘clean’ finish. But this would look equally adorable in an acrylic or wool. This pattern is suitable for an intermediate level crocheter because it’s quite fiddly in places, especially if you’re using the cotton which doesn’t have the same ‘give’ as acrylic. I’d love to see your results if want to tag me @chromacrochet or either Facebook or Instagram.
